Inauguration of New Honorary Doctors

On the occasion of the Memorial Day of the Hungarian Revolution of 1848 the University of Pécs conferred Honorary Doctor, Honorary Professor and Honorary Associate Professor titles. Habilitation certificates, PhD degrees were also awarded.

The Hungarian Revolution of 1848 grew into a war of independence from Habsburg rule. Many of its participants, including Lajos Kossuth, István Széchenyi, Sándor Petőfi, József Bem are among the most respected national figures in Hungarian history. The anniversary of the revolution's outbreak, on March 15, is a national holiday in Hungary since 1990.

In accordance with the requirements stipulated in the doctoral statutes of the University of Pécs the Senate of the University confers the degree of honorary doctor upon those people from Hungary and abroad who

  • have achieved outstanding results in their respective fields for several decades
  • have gained international recognition
  • have maintained close links with the University of Pécs
  • have rendered the university and the Hungarian sciences outstanding services
  • and the recognition of whose activities, by conferring upon them the honorary doctor title, boosts the prestige of the University of Pécs.

Róbert Gábriel greeted the audience and the special guests of the Formal Senate Meeting: Katalin Szili, former president of the Hungarian Parliament; Zsolt Páva, mayor of Pécs; His Excellence Jari Vilén, ambassador of the Republic of Finland in Hungary; Her Excellency Dorothee Janetzke-Wenzel, ambassador of the German Federal Republic in Hungary; and Mihály Mayer bishop.

At the Formal Senate Meeting on 11 March 2010, the following professors were awarded the honorary doctor title: Antti Piippo (on behalf of the Pollack Mihály Faculty of Engineering), Gerhard Pieschl (on behalf of the Faculty of Adult Education and Human Management Resources), Norbert Lammert (on behalf of the Faculty of Law), Peter Möhringer (on behalf of the Pollack Mihály Faculty of Engineering), Sveinung Lunde (on behalf of the Medical School) and András Zempléni (on behalf of the Faculty of Humanities). After presenting the summary of their inaugural addresses the professors upon whom the honorary doctor title was conferred received the university gown (designed by Katti Zoób) from the Rector, Róbert Gábriel, as well as the Honoris Causa diploma. The university gown symbolises the fact that from this day onwards Dr. Antti Piippo, Dr. Gerhard Pieschl, Dr. Norbert Lammert, Dr. Peter Möhringer, Dr. Sveiunung Lunde and Dr. András Zempléni belong to the professorial staff of the University of Pécs.

After the laudation on behalf of the promotors the professors upon whom the honorary doctor title was conferred received the university gown (designed by Katti Zoób) as well as the Honoris Causa diploma from the Rector, Róbert Gábriel.

The new honorary doctors Lammert, Lunde, Möhringer, Pieschl, Piippo, Zempléni presented a short summary of their inaugural speeches.

Norbert Lammert studied political science, sociology, modern history and social economics at the University of Bochum and at the University of Oxford, England. He is a German politician, president of the Bundestag. He gives many lectures, he is a very prolific writer; his main research topic is cultural politics and its potentials. He said in his speech at the Formal Senate Meeting that "there are not only happy days, especially in politics, but today is a happy day. I am very grateful for receiving the honorary doctor title of the University of Pécs."

Sveinung Lunde is an education and health politician; he has been the president of the Björknes College since 1996. He has been recruiting students in cooperation with the College International for the English Programme of the Medical School for over a decade from Norway. He emphasized that "the hundreds of students who graduate from the Medical School, University of Pécs are a great contribution to the Norwegian health system".

Peter Möhringer is a professor of the Fachhochschule Würzburg-Schweinfurt. The Pollack Mihály Faculty of Engineering and the Fachhochschule Würzburg-Schweinfurt have a long-standing and successful relationship, which is based on the mobility of students and professors. Peter Möhringer thanked for the honour of receiving the honorary doctor title of the University of Pécs in Hungarian language: "We were looking for a partner and we found a friend".

Gerhard Pieschl is an honorary bishop, he has had many clerical positions. His scientific research focuses on the relationship of the Catholic Church with human rights. In his practical clerical work he helps and supports exiles.

Antti Piippo studied engineering, he has always worked in the world of industry. He founded and owns the Elcoteq company, which has a very good long-term relationship with the University of Pécs. Piippo thanked for the honorary degree and talked about the past, present and the future of Elcoteq. He also said kind Hungarian words to the leadership of the University of Pécs.

András Zempléni cultural anthropologist is one of the most successful Hungarian social scientists working abroad. His scientific research ties him to France and French science, he is a specialist of African cultures and societies. He said at the Formal Senate Meeting that this honorary doctor title gives him courage and enthusiasm to carry on his work and research.

The Habilitation Committee conferred habilitation certificates upon 16 associate and assistant professors. After successfully defending their theses, PhD and DLA degrees were awarded to 55 candidates.
