Legal studies have always been an important component of academic programmes at the University of Pécs. In the period from 1950 to 1971 it was the only faculty that secured the continuity of the University after WW II. In 2008 the Faculty celebrates the 85th anniversary of the Modern Law School in Pécs.
At present about 5,000 students participate in the various courses at the Faculty. Its academic eminence is well illustrated by the fact that the Constitutional Court of Hungary has a member from the Faculty.
The Faculty has a well-equipped and modern building, providing all the necessary services for study and research. There are 150 new computers installed in the library, in two computer rooms and in the corridors with Internet access and automatic printing option. WiFi Internet access is available Faculty-wide.
COURSES AND TRAINING PROGRAMMES
The Faculty of Law of the University of Pécs offers degree programmes: Legal Administrator Programme (BA) (6 semesters) and MA in Law (10 semesters); special training programmes: e.g. the Legal Assistant Programme (4 semesters), and Specialised Postgraduate Courses for Practitioners (2-4 semesters). Doctoral degree programmes are also available, such as the Programme for Ph.D. candidates (6 semesters). The Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Business and Economics also plan to launch a BA programme in Law and Business Administration from the 2008/2009 academic year.
INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS
Several of our students are awarded scholarships to pursue their studies at law schools of various European universities in the framework of ERASMUS program. In addition to the larger European Community programmes, our Faculty has also established several bilateral and multilateral cooperation agreements in recent years (e.g. with the universities of Bayreuth, Tours, Graz, Wroclaw, Regensburg, Trier, Cluj-Napoca, Rijeka, Novi Sad, Osijek). The Faculty is a member of the European organization ELFA, and in recent times foreign relations of the individual departments have become quite intensive (e.g. the Department of Criminal Procedure initiated the establishment of the Central European Criminal Cooperation, involving about a dozen foreign criminal departments and institutes). The Faculty organises English language summer university programmes for law students and a growing number of international workshops and conferences every year.
From the academic year of 2005/2006, the Faculty of Law of Babes Bólyai University and the Faculty of Law of the University of Pécs launched a joint Master’s programme at the Faculty of Law, Babes Bólyai University (in Cluj-Napoca, Romania). The language of instruction is Hungarian. Training is primarily provided for students of the contracting parties to pursue their studies at the MA level; the lectures are given by the lecturers of the two faculties. Upon the successful fulfilment of the requirements students are awarded a joint LLM degree certified by both institutions.
